Do you own a Whirlpool refrigerator? A defect in your fridge’s compressor means your appliance may unexpectedly break. You may be entitled to reimbursement. Fill out the form to find out your consumer rights »

WHAT’S THE ISSUE?

Hagens Berman is investigating reports that Whirlpool Corporation sold refrigerators with faulty compressors, causing affected appliances to break within months and leaving consumers with spoiled food, baby formula, medications and other necessities. To make matters worse, a four- to six-week backlog in new compressor deliveries means consumers are left with the choice to either go without a fridge for a month or longer, or purchase another appliance out of necessity. Costs of replacements are upwards of $1,400. Whirlpool acknowledged this defect in a September 2022 service bulletin, but has so far done nothing to meaningfully compensate its affected customers.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M AFFECTED?

Hagens Berman investigators believe that a wide range of refrigerator models are affected, and if your Whirlpool refrigerator stopped working, it may likely be due to this widespread compressor failure defect. Whether or not this occurred within the one-year warranty period, you may be eligible for compensation. Fill out the form to find out your rights.

WHIRLPOOL’S WARRANTY FALLS SHORT

Although Whirlpool’s warranty guarantees free replacement of the compressor within one year of purchase, consumers who need a functional refrigerator cannot wait four to six weeks for a replacement part to arrive. Whirlpool has a responsibility to its customers to sell reliable products, especially when their intended purpose is so essential to daily life.

WHAT WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE OWNERS ARE SAYING

Online reports in forums and via the Better Business Bureau show owners of Whirlpool refrigerators experiencing nearly new appliances breaking down due to the compressor defect, and waiting months for replacements:

  • Less than 2 months with a high end refrigerator and the compressor goes out. Ruins hundreds of dollars in food. They won’t replace it and instead want to fix it. Everyone in our area won’t fix it because they know it needs to be replaced. All I can do at this point is try to tell everyone I know to not buy whirlpool
  • Whirlpool knows this is an issue and is waiting for consumers to call in a service request. What if this had happened to me 30 days later this would have been out of warranty and yet they still knew this was an issue and no recall. Shouldn't they be held responsible?
  • Welcome to a sad, miserable club. We are so screwed. My 4.3 month Whirlpool refrigerator went out bc of a compressor issue. Replaced a week ago and now I want to know how long it will last
  • Whirlpool nightmare 11 month old refrigerator compressor quit working.  55 minutes on hold to get an appointment 20 days out.  Called the service provider to see if they could come sooner and was advised the compressor will take 6-8 weeks for delivery. Who can live without a refrigerator for 3 months?

HOW CAN A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT HELP?

Through a class-action lawsuit, individual consumers can collectively bring claims against large companies who would otherwise have the upper hand, like Whirlpool. A class action seeks to level the playing field, bringing strength to collective action to change corrupt practices and negligent responses to customers. Though these measures do not bring immediate relief, they are a time-tested method of holding companies accountable for wrongdoing, including corporations’ failure to sell reliable products to their customers.
