Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro Investigations
Homeowner Appraisals
Date Started: March 3, 2009
Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro is investigating several appraisal firms on behalf of homeowners across the country.
Reports indicate lending and appraisal firms may conspire to overcharge homeowners for appraisals. The firm believes the practice is far reaching and may expand over the course of several years.
HBSS believes homeowners pay upwards of $400 for a routine home-purchase appraisal, but appraisal companies outsource the work to independent parties, pay a fraction of the cost for the work and then pocket the difference.
HBSS would like to hear from any homeowners who paid for a home appraisal in recent years. The firm believes the practice is widespread, regardless of your location or what company you used for the appraisal. If proven, it could mean hundreds of millions of dollars in unearned profit for these companies - a potentially huge and illegal practice at the expense of homeowners.
