Mr. Stevenson, with Steve Berman, helps lead the firm’s whistleblower practice. He has litigated and argued cases in federal district courts and at the courts of appeal across the country. Currently Mr. Stevenson is handling qui tam litigation under the False Claims Act (FCA) in several districts, while also handling whistleblower actions under the SEC, CFTC, and IRS whistleblower programs, seeking to help both federal and state governments collect potentially billions of dollars from companies violating the law. In addition to several cases that remain confidential and under seal, including cases in the healthcare and financial industries, Mr. Stevenson is handling litigation in the District of Massachusetts against medical device maker Medtronic. He has previously litigated FCA cases against large healthcare and pharmaceutical companies.
Also with Steve Berman, Mr. Stevenson is handling decades-long litigation against the Rio Tinto mining conglomerate in a suit under the Alien Tort Statute accusing Rio Tinto of war crimes and genocide against the native population on the island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea. The case is currently at the Supreme Court pending consideration of a petition for certiorari filed by Rio Tinto.
Mr. Stevenson previously litigated and helped settle class action cases on behalf of consumers and workers, including a case brought on behalf of 800,000 Postal Service employees for violations of the Privacy Act.
Mr. Stevenson graduated from the Yale Law School. While there, he was co-founder and director of the Yale Law School Workers’ Rights Project. He previously graduated first-in-his-class from Gonzaga University (summa cum laude) with a B.A. in philosophy and political science. He was recognized nationally as a Truman Scholar. After law school, Mr. Stevenson completed two federal clerkships before working as a prosecutor. First, as law clerk to the Hon. Charles S. Haight, Jr., of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; then as a law clerk for the Hon. Betty B. Fletcher, of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
