Hagens Berman’s Steve Berman Receives Top Spot in National Lawyer Ranking

SEATTLE Hagens Berman’s co-founder and managing partner, Steve Berman, has been named to Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Lawyers in America, an annual look at the best of the profession.

The list serves to recognize lawyers who have achieved the highest level of success in the past year, from winning monumental verdicts to overseeing the biggest legal deals.

The 2018 ranking recognizes Berman’s leadership of Hagens Berman to pioneer novel cases in new areas of the law.

“This year, our firm proudly doubled-down on our core mission to protect those most vulnerable, in areas often overlooked by our peers,” Berman said. “We’re proud to be recognized for our achievements and look forward to continuing to strive for increasingly better results for those we represent.”

With Steve’s direction, the firm filed the first RICO class action against Harvey Weinstein, his companies and board of directors, representing six named victims on behalf of those who suffered sexual assault and other heinous acts at the hands of Harvey Weinstein. The suit details an organized enterprise of criminal behavior.

Steve also recently achieved a groundbreaking $208 million settlement against the NCAA on behalf of tens of thousands of current and former NCAA D1 student-athletes, ending an antitrust class action stating the NCAA deprived the class the full cost of attendance, illegally capping scholarships. This case will mean real repayment (average $6,000 for those who played for four years) to plaintiffs.

The firm recommitted to Steve’s vision of protecting the environment, adding a new office and four attorneys dedicated to environmental cases. The firm won bids for outside counsel on behalf of the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Calif. and New York City, against BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon and Shell alleging responsibility for the cities’ costs of protecting residents from global warming-induced hazards.

All practice areas within the American legal profession are considered for ranking in the guide, and a variety of legal professionals are included, such as private, government, and other public interest attorneys, judges and law school professors.
