What Volkswagen owners can expect from the diesel settlement

A federal judge on Tuesday approved a settlement between Volkswagen AG and about 475,000 owners of diesel cars that don’t meet U.S. emissions standards.

Volkswagen admitted last year that the cars were programmed to cheat on emissions tests. The German automaker will spend up to $10 billion to either buy the cars back or fix them and compensate owners.

Here are answers to questions about the deal, which is the largest class-action settlement in the history of the American auto industry: read more »

Toyota to recall 5.8 million cars in Japan, China, Europe over Takata airbags

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) on Wednesday said it was recalling about 5.8 million cars at home and abroad over potentially faulty air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. (7312.T), including those used as replacement parts following a 2010 recall.

Automakers worldwide are ramping up the industry's biggest-ever recall after parts supplier Takata, under pressure from U.S. authorities, agreed earlier this year to declare more of its air bags as defective in the United States and other countries. read more »

Spanish court orders VW to pay compensation to buyer of polluting Audi

A Spanish court on Wednesday for the first time ruled in favor of a buyer of a Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) car with altered emissions software, ordering two of the German firm's local units to pay a 5,000 euro ($5,457) fine to the car's owner.

The judge said the owner of an Audi Q5, bought in 2013, had wanted compensation and a new car after finding out last year when the VW diesel scandal erupted it had software which allowed it to cheat emissions tests.

Courts in Spain have ruled in favor of Volkswagen in five previous cases related to the emissions scandal, and Wednesday's sentence could open the door to a wave of new consumer lawsuits.

Spanish consumer organization OCU called for other people with affected cars in Spain to join more than 5,500 others in filing a class-action lawsuit against VW. read more »

The company also released recalls for the Mercury Mariner, Ford Escape and Super Duty Chassis Cab.

Ford announced today that it is recalling 8,000 2015-2017 Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs for an improperly crimped engine oil cooler tube assembly that could leak. It affects GT350s built from February 24, 2015 to August 30, 2016. The defect could lead to the hose separating and causing a leak, which, if bad enough, could cause a major loss of oil and significant engine damage. The oil leak also presents a potential fire hazard. read more »

Ford recalls 400,000 older model SUVs for potential fuel leak

Ford Motor Co. has issued a safety recall for about 400,000 older-model Ford Escapes and Mercury Mariners for potential fuel leaks.

The affected SUVs have 3.0-liter engines with flex fuel. The recall includes Ford Escapes from the 2010-12 model years and Mercury Mariners from the 2010-11 model years.
