Fort Worth schools to pay $135,000 to whistleblower

FORT WORTH--The Fort Worth school district will pay a former school district employee $135,000 to settle a whistleblower lawsuit, and the district will reinstate her to her job.
In the lawsuit, Aracely Chavez alleged that she was fired because she alerted administrators about problems with a new payroll system in 2008. The January 2009 launch of the system was marred by a series of errors, including at least $1.5 million on overpayments to employees and former staffers.
School trustees on Tuesday agreed to the lawsuit settlement terms. The settlement must be approved by a judge, said Bertha Whatley, Fort Worth schools chief legal counsel.
