WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Hagens Berman is investigating H&R Block Inc. for alleged “data wiping” customers’ tax data to discourage them from downgrading to a less expensive or no-cost filing product.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M AFFECTED?
If your in-progress tax return data was deleted by H&R Block while downgrading or switching products on their website, you may have rights to compensation.
ABOUT ALLEGED H&R BLOCK DATA WIPING
In February 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed an administrative complaint against H&R Block, alleging that the tax preparation company “designed its online products to present an obstacle course of tedious challenges to consumers, pressuring them into overpaying for its products.” According to the complaint, H&R Block misled consumers into paying for more expensive and complicated tax products than their financial situations required. When customers later tried to reduce service costs after filling in all of their tax information, H&R Block deleted their data from its system, forcing customers to re-enter their information and/or contact customer support to use the cheaper tax product better suited to their situation. But when customers wanted to upgrade to more expensive services after entering their tax data, the FTC alleges H&R Block transferred the information without issue.
HOW CAN A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT HELP?
Through a class-action lawsuit, consumers can collectively bring claims against large corporations that would otherwise have the upper hand. A class-action lawsuit seeks to level the playing field, bringing strength to collective action to change corrupt practices. Though these measures do not bring immediate relief, they are a time-tested method of holding companies accountable for wrongdoing.
