Attorneys are investigating the rights of parents and minors against Instagram and its parent company and social media giant, Facebook, following revelations that company insiders knew the platform harms teens, especially girls.

HOW INSTAGRAM HARMS TEENS, GIRLS

A whistleblower has revealed that Facebook’s algorithms specifically harm the esteem, self-image and overall happiness of teens, especially young girls. Facebook’s own internal research, shared by the whistleblower, has showed, “…potential harm for some of its young users, especially girls, while it publicly downplayed the negative impacts. For some of the Instagram-devoted teens, the peer pressure generated by the visually focused app led to mental-health and body-image problems, and in some cases, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts, the research showed,” according to recent news.

In addition to what's been in the news lately, Facebook has a continuing problem with serving ads involving alcohol, drugs and extreme weight loss to children as young as 13, with the obvious potential to cause harm.

FACEBOOK WHISTLEBLOWER REVEALS WHAT SHE KNEW

The Facebook whistleblower, revealed in an Oct. 3, 2021, interview with 60 Minutes to be Frances Haugen, shared key internal research from Facebook revealing that the social media giant has been well aware of negative impacts on young users of Instagram.

“What’s super tragic, is Facebook’s own research says, as these young women begin to consume this eating disorder content, they get more and more depressed, and it actually makes them use the app more,” the former employee revealed on 60 Minutes.

Despite understanding the devastating effects Instagram has on children, Facebook has ignored the evidence for its own profit, putting children at risk.
