Steve W. Berman of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, Named Co-Lead Counsel in Lumber Liquidators Class-Action Lawsuit

SEATTLE Attorney Steve W. Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has been named co-lead counsel in the high-profile class action against Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL) concerning the flooring company’s sales of formaldehyde-tainted flooring.

The case alleges that Lumber Liquidators sold noncompliant composite flooring that contains hazardous levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde.

“I am thankful that the court has the confidence to appoint me as one of the co-leads to direct this case, and I will fight to uphold the rights of these millions of affected consumers,” Berman said. “It is an honor to be chosen.”

The suit against Lumber Liquidators seeks to represent a nationwide class of consumers who allege that Lumber Liquidators sold the flooring manufactured in China tainted with hazardous levels of formaldehyde while falsely labeling their products as meeting or exceeding California Air Resources Board emissions standards.

Berman has been a champion of consumer rights since he co-founded Hagens Berman in 1993.

Berman also served as co-lead counsel in negotiating a $1.6 billion settlement for consumers from Toyota Motor Corp. in 2013, following claims of sudden, unintended acceleration in many of its vehicles, and is also currently co-lead counsel in the class-action lawsuit against General Motors Co. covering claims resulting from personal injuries and diminished vehicle value related to GM’s recall of millions of vehicles over faulty ignition switches and other possible defects.

Berman was chosen from a field of dozens of lawyers asking to be considered to lead this case. U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Trenga is overseeing the case in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
