Hagens Berman to Close Offices on Election Day to Promote Voting and Volunteer Participation

SEATTLE – Seattle-based consumer-rights law firm, Hagens Berman, announced plans to close all nine of its U.S. offices on Election Day to promote voter participation and encourage employee access to volunteer opportunities.

“We are in the midst of a major turning point in our nation’s history and likely the most consequential election of our time,” said Steve W. Berman, managing partner and co-founder of Hagens Berman. “The work our firm does hinges on access to justice and basic human rights. We can’t think of a better way to promote our firm’s ethos than to close our offices for Election Day for the national vote, and we encourage others to do the same.”

Hagens Berman's Executive Committee has also committed one lawyer to assist full time in the fight against voter suppression ahead of Election Day.

Berman issued the following statement concerning Hagens Berman’s efforts to support democracy during the 2020 election:

Voting is the essence of democracy, and in 2020, the right to vote – and democracy itself – are under threat. To do our part to help protect the right to vote and the integrity of our government, Hagens Berman will close its offices on Election Day, November 3, to allow all employees the opportunity to volunteer at polling stations, call centers and other means.

This commitment to service is especially important during the coronavirus pandemic, which will likely prevent many poll workers from volunteering. In their absence, we must do everything we can to make sure every vote is counted and that any attempt at intimidation, voter suppression or other forms of manipulation is stopped.

We must remember that our civic duty does not end at the ballot box. Employees who are willing to venture to particularly contentious parts of the country may do so, and many remote options exist to support voter access. Even states where voting is conducted by mail need help with signature and ballot verification. Here's how to get involved: http://www.justice.org/ways-to-give/volunteer/vpac.
