Hagens Berman Opens First International Office in London, Launches Hagens Berman UK LLP

Group and competition litigation law firm to bring award-winning plaintiff and consumer advocacy to United Kingdom

LONDONHagens Berman, a United States-based plaintiffs’ class and group action litigation law firm today announced its first international office in London, formally launching Hagens Berman UK LLP.

“Hagens Berman’s decades of success in U.S. class actions have built a reputation of relentless representation of our clients, and we aim to achieve the same for those we represent in the United Kingdom,” said Steve Berman, managing partner and co-founder of Hagens Berman. “Today more than ever, it is important to protect consumers. COVID-19, volatile markets and changing regulations require greater scrutiny. Individual rights and resources need to be protected, and we are eager to do so in England and Wales.”

Hagens Berman’s London lawyers’ work will supplement the firm’s existing work in various spaces, including automotive and emissions-cheating group-action cases, competition and antitrust matters, investor fraud and more.

Hagens Berman UK’s first focus builds upon its success in the United States and its recent $700 million settlement with Mercedes on behalf of U.S. Mercedes owners of affected diesel vehicles following the firm’s independent investigation. The consumer settlement came in addition to the $1.5 billion joint settlement reached between the U.S. Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board with Mercedes over emission cheating. Mercedes was forced to conduct a nationwide recall, repair Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles, pay more than $945 million in penalties, perform projects to mitigate pollution and revamp its procedures.

In England and Wales the firm will be advocating in the same manner for owners of Mercedes diesel vehicles in a group-litigation action against the automaker for the use of an illegal emissions-cheating device used to mask non-compliant levels of pollution.

Hagens Berman was the impetus for emissions-cheating claims against Mercedes in the U.S., having obtained and tested the vehicles itself. The firm’s diesel investigation into Mercedes came on the heels of its role as the first law firm in the U.S. to sue Volkswagen on behalf of consumers following the announcement of its widespread emissions cheating, dubbed Dieselgate. The firm went on to help lead that litigation, which culminated in a $14.7 billion settlement, the largest automotive case in history. Hagens Berman also represented owners of VW franchise dealerships against the automaker, obtaining an additional $1.6 billion in settlements for plaintiffs in that matter.

“We are immensely proud to have been led to this moment by so many groundbreaking achievements,” Berman said. “We look forward to continuing that same history into the future domestically and abroad. Our eyes are always on the horizon, and we are dedicated to working hard through the law to achieve the best possible outcome for those most vulnerable to wrongdoing.”

Hagens Berman UK LLP will be regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority pending Approval of its application.
