DATA BREACH EXPLAINED
Due to Marriott's lax data security measures, hackers were able to illegally access its Starwood Hotels reservation database, including all information since 2014, potentially exposing personal information belonging to an estimated 500 million guests.
According to the hotel chain, Marriott recently discovered that an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps towards removing it.
WHAT INFORMATION WAS STOLEN?
For 327 million people, Marriott says the guests' exposed information includes their names, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, date of birth and arrival and departure information. For millions of others, their credit card numbers and card expiration dates were potentially compromised.

If you are, be sure to keep a record of what you paid to protect yourself from identity theft.
Some companies (notably Experian) purport to offer a service of scanning the “dark web” for your information. At present, we are not aware of what exactly these companies are doing or how accurate or reliable their services are.
