Hagens Berman Voices Support for California AG’s Motion to End Amazon’s Alleged Antitrust Violations Raised by Firm’s National Class Action

Firm representing largest ever certified class in U.S. history in pending litigation against tech giant, among a dozen other active class actions

SEATTLE – Consumer law firm, Hagens Berman, voiced support for a pending motion for a preliminary injunction filed against Amazon by California’s attorney general, having filed similar claims in July 2022 to recover consumer losses arising from the same core allegations that Amazon’s vendor contracts cause vertical price-fixing.

“We take a strong interest in the outcome of the state’s motion, which seeks to enjoin conduct that we have challenged on behalf of a national consumer class,” said Steve W. Berman, managing partner and co-founder of Hagens Berman.

“Consumers stand to benefit greatly from pending claims against Amazon, and we hope to bring relief to millions for what we believe to be blatant antitrust behavior,” Berman added. “We’re proud to see Attorney General Bonta seeking to end practices that we raised by our earlier filed litigation, a reminder of strength in numbers.”

The firm’s monumental push for consumers against Amazon began in March 2020 and now includes 13 active cases, including one case that is the largest certified class action in U.S. history. Three of Hagens Berman’s cases against Amazon have spurred follow-on actions from attorneys general in Washington, D.C. and in California. Since it began trailblazing antitrust and consumer-protection cases against the world’s largest online retailer, Hagens Berman’s legal team has deposed numerous Amazon kingpins, including Jeffrey Bezos, Amazon’s founder.

Amazon Echoes

California AG, Rob Bonta in September 2022 brought claims against Amazon echoing Hagens Berman’s March 2020 case highlighting Amazon’s anticompetitive agreements with its third-party sellers, and its July 2022 lawsuit highlighting Amazon’s anticompetitive agreements with its suppliers. Hagens Bemran’s antitrust cases against Amazon related to consumer price-fixing and monopoly claims include De Coster v. Amazon.com, Inc.; Brown v. Amazon.com, IncFrame-Wilson v. Amazon.com, Inc;. The firm has also brought antitrust cases against Amazon concerning price-fixing of e-books, Apple products, audiobooks and more.

Washington, D.C. attorney general, Karl Racine, also filed a similar case against Amazon in 2021, including repeating claims brought by Hagens Berman in 2020 regarding Amazon’s anticompetitive agreements with its third-party sellers and was the first to raise the alarm concerning Amazon’s vendor contracts.

“We are pleased to have been able to pave the way for future antitrust actions from state attorneys general and await the outcome of Bonta’s most recent motion that echoes the claims we brought in 2022,” Berman said.
