Whistleblower Attorney Steve Berman Comments on Record IRS Whistleblower Award

Steve Berman, managing partner at Hagens Berman, a nationwide whistleblower protection law firm, today lauded an award the Internal Revenue made to former Swiss banker Bradley Birkenfeld for providing information on tax evasion at his employer, UBS AG (NYSE: UBS).

"Today's announcement by the IRS of a $104 million award to a whistleblower is good news for anyone who is concerned about fairness in our tax system," Berman said. "The amount of the award to Mr. Birkenfeld signifies two things; that the IRS is taking information provided by whistleblowers seriously, and that the whistleblower program can handsomely reward those who step forward with evidence of wrongdoing."

Mr. Birkenfeld alleged that his employer, UBS AG, helped rich Americans evade billions of dollars in taxes by hiding money in UBS' Switzerland bank. The company was ultimately fined $780 million for its role in the scheme.

"The IRS whistleblower program is a crucial tool - especially in a time of fiscal challenges -to make sure that corporations and financial institutions pay their fair share," Berman added.

"Hagens Berman represents whistleblowers with potential claims under the IRS program. We encourage individuals with claims to consult with an experienced whistleblower attorney to learn about their rights and responsibilities as a whistleblower under the program," he concluded.
