Students from Oregon State University filed a class-action lawsuit against the school demanding repayment for tuition, room and board and other fees amid the COVID-19-related campus closures and transition to online-only education.

OSU’s COSTS CONTINUE DURING COVID-19

Oregon State University sent students home, closed campus facilities and transitioned to online instruction in order to maintain social distancing and flatten the curve. In spite of this unprecedented disruption in collegiate life, OSU continued charging tuition – a minimum of $2,644 per quarter at the school’s main Corvallis campus – and various student fees, as if nothing changed.

Students and their families paid OSU for in-person instruction that was not available, access to buildings they could not enter, technology, programs and services that OSU did not provide, and activities that were not available.

OSU students and their families did not receive the full value of the services they paid for, chief among them the benefits of in-person instruction and the opportunity to live and learn on campus.

TUITION PAYERS’ RIGHTS

Hagens Berman is investigating lawsuits that would seek reimbursement for tuition payers and other expenses at colleges and universities across the nation. Our investigation is not limited to those already named in litigation. We want to fight for the rights of those who have been charged for tuition and fees at a college or university for in-person on campus education, but instead received online only courses due to the outbreak of COVID-19, with no reimbursement. Hagens Berman believes that institutions of higher learning have no right to keep the tuition and fees charged given the coronavirus outbreak and lack of options to students. We think tuition payers and those paying fees deserve compensation.
